Thank you, mikey, for confirming what I’ve already come to consider a «near-consensus»! I do appreciate your remark: every comment helps me to make up my own mind... — db.

Not that I could really add anything to what's already been said, but my vote goes to this one, as well. It seems more impact full and there's plenty of distance to qualify for the Challenge topic IMhO. Very cool ":^D -mikey

Thanks, Rod, for stating your opinion! — db.

For me the blue ice is the dominant focal point with this crop but it still says distance & looks really good. I don't think it would matter how you cropped this shot as with this well shot subject matter any crop would look really good The first shot I think has more distance impact & also a nice sense of wilderness & place. So for me this is more a picy of the ice & distant mountain rather that a picy of a place.(If that makes any sense):-) I think more people would like this one though.

Oh, and, you're very welcome. :) ~ Lonnit

Daniel, I could have spoken until I was glacier blue in the face, but if you were closed-minded, it would have been in vain. You were open to my ideas, you weighed them, you decided they had merit, and you acted upon it. That deserves kudos. :) The world is swamped with closed-minded know-it-alls; an open mind is always refreshing. :) ~ Lonnit

The kudos—I’m afraid—must go to you, Lonnit, for your force of persuasion (by convincing analysis and according advice)... ;-) Thanks again! — db.

Yes :) Now we focus on the mountain. Well done, and kudos on the open mind! ~ Lonnit

You are really fast, tv... Many thanks for that prompt comment. I am glad that thanks to your and Lonnit’s recommendations I can improve my «photographic eye» and post-processing skills. (I am not overly pleased with the blue hues, though; so I’ll substitute another version of the same crop in a few minutes). — db.

Excellent analysis, Lonnit, and excellent result, db. The "distance" effect is maintained as the focus is shifted back from the glacier to the mountain and all that gorgeous sky as the backdrop. This is the best of your three variations. Discussion 2 is also an effective crop, but it gives up some of the "distance effect" as it is more compressed. -tv

Thank you, Lonnit, for commenting with such detailed advice. You have convinced me (and a apologize to tv for not believing him in the first place...). As soon as I’ll get a few minutes I’ll do as you recommend and—if still convinced—substitute the new version (leaving the original in Pending to compare). Thanks again! — db.

Lovely image, Daniel. I do wish there were a little kayak or something in the water because I don't know what to focus on. The centered horizon divides the image in half. If you crop the image so that the horizon falls on either the upper or lower thirds line, the mountain (which I missed at first) becomes the focal point. For this challenge, the distant mountains would be an excellent focal point. For the record, although either top of bottom thirds work, I would opt for the cropping of the water, as it is less interesting than the sky. I think this makes for a much stronger image, and being that the photo is so lovely, I think it's worth the crop to truly bring out its beauty. It's a lovely capture indeed! ~ Lonnit

Good point Rod - I got off topic. -tv

Thank you, tv and Rod, for commenting. And thanks, Rod, for coming to my rescue. Though I do not agree with your «anti-water» statement in this case (I think the scene needs that forground to be balanced), tv, I *am* amused by your pun... ;-) — db.

Don't forget the topic Tommy as I think the water here helps with the distance effect. Very nice shot too.
ctfchallenge11-May-2007 21:16
Working backward through your three postings, this is an even more effective exposure than the first. But this one lacks foreground interest, and since I believe in cropping, I would say: better to show off the rest of the scene than dilute it with too much lake water (shameful pun acknowledged). -tv
