Upscale Dress Shop Window Display, Kowloon

Hong Kong

... the prices displayed are in 1966 HK dollars and it'd be interesting to know what the conversion rate was at the time. I do recall that tailored clothing was amazingly inexpensive; for instance, I used to pay $4 US for hand-made dress shirts ... $5 US for French cuffs ... tailor-made suits were in the $30-50 US range .... and shoes were a special bargain. For years, I had my shoes made at Lee Kee Bootmaker, Kowloon, at phenomenally low prices. Even while living in the States for years thereafter, I'd merely send Lee Kee a magazine advertisement for a given pair of shoes and, about 3-4 weeks later, they'd be in my mailbox. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, those were the days ....

I just bought a pair of Lee Kee oxfords in a garage sale, most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Like new condition too. Are they still in business?

I'm also a Lee Kee shoe buyer from the 1960, and visited their home on Telegraph Hill for dinner. I'd like to order shoes again from Hong Kong. Are they still in business? Anyone? Find me at: www.bluehill-tenneyhill.com

I bought shoes form Lee Kee when I was n Viet Nam 1968! I WOULD SEND THEM PICS FROM Esquire magazine and they would custom make shoes for me. When I cam home in 1969 I had purchased 11 pairs! Can anyone tell me what happened to them and if there is a replacement? Goldencst@aolcom

Do you perhaps know the fate of Lee Kee, Bootmaker, or at least how long they remained in business? Many thanks, S. Minasian

I think the rate then was about 6:1, maybe 5.70 in '66. I still have a shoehorn from Lee Kee's; shoes at Lee Kee's, suits at Mohan's, room at the Hilton about $12US with Navy ID, Rolex at China Fleet Club $105US. Those were the days.

I agree.....they just don't charge you like they used to! Very cool shot!
