Jefferson County Courthouse_NE

Port Townsend, WA

neo-Romanesque building was designed in 1892 by Seattle architect
Willis A. Ritchie. The deep red smooth bricks were shipped from
St. Louis and some 786 tons of sandstone were brought from Alaska.
The clock tower is 124-feet tall and houses both a bell and clock
made of solid brass by the E. Howard Watch & Clock Company of Boston, MA
in 1891. The clock hands are made of cedar. The clock mechanism is
similar to a cuckoo clock (with 250 pound weights traveling from the
tower to the basement) and needs to be rewound each Friday.
