The star shaped sound hole might reflect the length of the beaten tones. The Santoor sounds really "wet" with a lot of preverb and long lasting sounds, as we do not have the dampers on the chords like we find them for each key in a piano.

Da es nicht die im Klavier vorhandenen Dämpfer über den Saiten gibt, klingt jeder Ton aus. Der lange Nachhall gehört so zum charakteritischen Klang dieses Instruments. Die Schallöffnungen sind meist sehr klein und formvoll verziert.
