Oh my god, Ai Li. This one leaves me speechless. I can't even bring up any words except to say you are an extraordinary observer of life, and I hope you never stop taking photographs.
Charukesi 19-May-2007 15:36
I am struck speechless by this image! as Phil has said, this is a study in incongruous juxtaposition of elements. outstanding.
SimplePhotography 17-Apr-2007 19:54
I'm speechless. It's so perfect! Dark and light on one side, the other way around on the other side. And then the meaning you show us. I'm absolutely stunned by this image. It's possibly the best you ever came up with.

Fantastic juxtaposition!!
Stu Egan 01-Feb-2007 23:36
Incredible. The message is clear and hard hitting. It's sad to see; it makes me think this man has lost hope...the nearest he'll get to it is this drawing. Either that or (some kind of) salvation is within reach, staring him in the face...but he's not open to it.
Ros 01-Feb-2007 08:54
Dramatic and powerful. Well done!
Richard Calmes 01-Feb-2007 02:09
A very thought provoking image! V
TimA 01-Feb-2007 00:00
"Tell me what to do oh Lord" says the picture on the left. It's really not that difficult to work out from the image on the right...

A powerful image !

This is a very symbolic juxtaposition. One could argue that the spiritual is a luxury, in the area of the "Want", and not in the area of the "Need" - and in the same range, helping the other is also something that is not part of the Need. An Excellent street image, Ai Li.
Martha Albuquerque 31-Jan-2007 11:30
Amazing composition, full of dramaticity. My vote.

That's my question so many times, Ai Li ..

exellent composition a,d so strong!
Kal Khogali 31-Jan-2007 04:30
!!WoW! What a great image Ai Li. I like most that the cry for faith is so loud on the left. The bright light maybe even hope. In the end this man on the ground can only sleep and dream of hope. It is what he needs right now, more than anything. One of your greatest street image. Thankyou for the link ;-)K
J. Scott Coile 31-Jan-2007 04:23
Emotional and moving photojournalistic juxtaposition (try to say that 5 times fast). Vote.

Phil Douglis 31-Jan-2007 04:01
When I saw Kal's image yesterday, I was stunned by its multiplicity of incongruous juxtapositions. I am just as stunned by those I see in your image as well, Ai Li. I am sure Kal will be as well. Let me salute them: back view vs front view, hands aloft vs hands relaxed, awareness vs comatose, painted symbols vs. living symbol, dieties vs. mortals, positives vs negative, exploding sun vs exploding plant, and those are just for starters. In the end, both you and Kal are making thoughtful social commentaries on urban life in the two most populated countries on earth.

needs vs want... what a wonderful contrast... would you trade what you need most for what you want at the moment?...Chiara.
