For Andrew

St. Andrew's Cross spider. Photographed in North Queensland, and showing a good example of the "cross" after which it is named. The cross is made of special 'fluffed-up' silk (known sa Stabilimentum). It's purpose seems to be uncertain, though it is only made by mature spiders.

other sizes: small medium original

What a curious construction. It does remind one of the stabilizing bars often seen in the central part of orb spider webs. I wonder if it helps to conceal the animal from preditors?

I do always appreciate your commentary with these shots. It enriches the experience of seeing the natural wonders.

Wow! What a great thing to see and know! Is this one poisonous? I know there are a lot of poisonous spiders Down Under. I really like this. V on the macro and the lesson.

I have to say he's one of my faves to photograph...I love the " Zippered " effect from his silk.

Interesting how it holds its legs in the shape of the cross too!
