Sunset Over U Bein Bridge, Amarapura (Dec 06)

This is another favourite photo-taking spot in Burma, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Amarapura is today a city of some 10,000 inhabitants, and located only about 12 km south of Mandalay. It was built in 1782 by King Bodawpaya, who moved the royal capital to there from Inwa on the advice of court astrologers, the Manipurian Brahmans. To the south of Amarapura lies Lake Taungthaman, which is spanned by the 1.2-km long U Bein Bridge, constructed entirely of teak planks by King Bodawpaya's mayor (U Bein) following the move of the royal capital from Inwa to Amarapura. The bridge stands today just as it has for over two centuries. It takes about 15 minutes to cross the bridge on foot.

We hired a row boat to transport us to the middle of the lake, from where we took the sunset shots of the sun setting over the bridge. This image is straight from the camera, with white balance set to cloudy in-camera and little post-processing except for some cropping and slight darkening. Of course, whether you like the effect or not depends on the individual's own taste and preference.

Wonderful image, Jeremy. When I visited here, it was high noon -- and the light was awful. You made the most of your opportunity here, via abstarction, scale incongruity, and human values.
