Phare de Calais

Calais, France

There was a beacon at the summit of the watch tower from 1818. King Louis-Philippe in his plans for improving French ports decided the construction of a first-class lighthouse and this started operating in 1848. 53 meters high, its tower is octagonal on the outside and round on the inside with walls 1.90 meter at the base and 1.15 meters at the summit. The foundations decend 7.40 meters under the cellars and there are 271 steps in all. The light has been electrified since 1883 and somehow escaped damage in both World Wars.
