Oak Alley Plantation

Vacherie, Louisiana - St. James Parish

Built in 1839 the house is 7000 feet square surrounded by 28 Doric columns. The spectacular avenue that leads to the house is 28 live oak trees that are at least 100 years older than the house.
The oaks are planted eighty feet apart.
All of the oaks are members of the Live Oak Society.

Very pretty subject and a great photo to capture the essence. I wonder....if the trees are 100 years older than the house, why were they planted this way? Was there an older house on this site? Or did someone have a premonition that one day the trees will provide a great path to a house?
