The concrete block sits on top of the upcast shaft, which was used for ventilation. The wheel is on the site of the downcast shaft, used to transport men and materials. They were sunk in 1853 to a depth of 600 feet. Although production of coal ceased in 1938 the shafts remained in use until 1989 as an escape route and pumping station for neighbouring collieries.
