The combination of the Canon 1.4x extender with the 300mm f/4L IS on an EOS 30D create an effective focal length of 1.4x1.6x300 = 672mm. This is more than double the focal length of the 300mm lens. Despite this the IS worked flawlessly (on a monopod).
