Same lens as that choppy water that is so great? Wow! Thanks for the link. Yes, the egg-agons are pretty cool for the cat shot. Unfortunately, I'll have to rescind the term "egg-agons", as I see from the cat shot, that it should correctly be called "cat's-eye bokeh". :) So, why does this lens produce cat's-eye bokeh anyway? ~ Lonnit

Thanks for the comments!

Sharon, the title: boats like the ones in the background are often referred to as toys by their owners. They cost a lot and you will often hear the final buying decision justified with a phrase like, I work hard, I deserve nice toys to play with. Worker bees are of course famed for working hard, so the theme of the picture is the worker and the toys.

Lonnit, please don't hold back, I'd be interested to hear your true feelings! LOL! Seriously, please don't write off this superb lens on the strength of this one image. As Cat mentions, the bokeh is circular in the middle and turns to pointy egg-agons(TM: Lonnit!) towards the edges. The bokeh is harsh and defined in this shot due to the chosen FOV and DOF. The lens is capable of producing fine images and nice bokeh. I did a quick search in my library and found I have 887 images taken with this lens, including several that I rate among my favourites. I put a small sample into a gallery for you to look at, to perhaps show the lens in a better light:http://homepage.mac.com/miller.a/EFS60/

The first image has pointy egg-agons bokeh which I find complements the subject perfectly!

Have to agree with Lonnit about the Bokeh. But this is a great lens when used for what its designed for... macros. The circular bokeh is in the center by design and as you go towards the edge, it changes to spindle shape.
To support my point that its a great lens, look in here:http://www.pbase.com/duncansmith/flower_abstracts

Hi Lonnit, as always, I read your comments with much interest (also since I also use this lens quite often). Just as soon as I close this comment box, I am jumping back to my two entries to check for any "pointy egg-agons"... and then try to fix those urgently before you get a chance to spot them...! :-) :-) Regards ~jnconradie

Excellent use of bokeh as a strong element in the image. You did your part extremely well. Unfortunately, the equipement has not. Although I love what you've done, I find the bokeh itself is horribly ugly - it's large, clunky, overwhelming, and in-your-face, and resembles in no way, circles. It's not even hexagons or octagons - it's pointy egg-agons!! Good bokeh is very pleasing and soothing, its fine and elegant. Harsh, chunky bokeh is unpleasant bokeh.

Knowing nothing about this lens, I would assume it's a cheap lens. I just googled it and came up with a price tag of around $600. I'm shocked! Like I said, you did your job, but this lens failed miserably. ~ Lonnit

Excellent bokeh here! I am not sure what your title means, though. I love the sharpness of the bee. ~Sharon

Lots and lots and lots of bokeh, without any doubt. :-)

And of course another great insect capture. How can we be sure these are really alive; not simply "glued-in-position-specimens" ? :-) Only kidding! :-)
