This is beautiful, Najinsky! The light is just spectacular as if it was coming from within the flower! I enjoyed looking at your gallery and do agree that you chose the best one for this challenge. Although, I really like number 13 a lot! Excellent work! ~Sharon

Thanks Susan and Sam. Sam, no mirror lockup, just the fast shutter, getting in real close and a reasonably steady hand (I try to apply shutter pressure in a way that does not tilt the camera), but mostly the excellent EF-S 60mm f2.8 macro lens from Canon. I love the lens and am delighted with some of the shots I've got out of it. If you have time, have a look at the gallery linked in the comment to see some more shots from the lens. - Najinsky

Thanks for the informative guidelines Najinsky. The details and sharpness are incredible. Do you lock up the mirror is these situations? Sam Attal.

The flower almost has a cellophane feel to it. And the wasp is so delicate. Nice combination and great capture! I'm like Nico, my bugs need to be dead for me to be able to get a good shot from them!

Wonderful bokeh and interesting details for the eye to explore!
Canon DSLR Challenge06-Nov-2006 21:05
I guess I was looking a little too far into the smooth b/g for bokeh and there it was right in front of me! LOL! Terrific shot! :-) CJ

Thanks for the comments.

Nico, the technique: First there are the settings to avold blur which were to up the iso (mostly 800) and put onto manual focus. Usually I would also stop down to f4-9 depending on how close I can get but that would kill the bokeh here so for this challenge I left it at 2.8 and reduced the iso to 400. I use manual focus to prevent hunting and allow faster focus adjustments through small movements of the camera.

The flowers were buzzing with flies like this and wasps. The flies didn't mind me getting in real close (lens just a couple of inches away) but some of the wasps got a bit protective and tried to buzz me away a few times, but in general they were too busy with their collection to bother with me. I got some great shots of the wasps too but not many with any bokeh although there is one I'm contemplating posting.

I was shooting for about 40 minutes, so some patience needed, but more persistence really and not letting the wasps dictate!

CJ - I count more than a dozen clear bokeh circles, how many is enough ;-)

My main problem is the colour space. When converted to JPEG in sRGB there were horrible artefacts in the background colour graduations so I tried a version using Adobe RBG and the results were much better and thats what I posted here. However, when viewed on the work PCs the colours are very dull and muddy so I'm going to have to find a different way of processing into sRGB. The colours are bright and vibrant in the actual image. - Najinsky

I have tried a million times (... well, almost...!) to capture such a sharp and in-focus insect on a flower - thus far with miserable results. So, I take my hat off to you for this one. What is the trick? Basically lots of patience? :-) Compliments. ~jnconradie
