When I was the Unit Ranger at Wm. B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park, I observed hundreds of tourists practicing what I came to call, "taking coup." A
tour bus would pull up and disgorge its passengers. First, they would race to the bathrooms; then they would take a picture of the adobe from the parking
lot; then get back on the bus. "OK. Got that one. Let's go!" Total elasped time to explore the rich cultural heritage of the adobe: five minutes and 32 seconds.
Sad to report, I caught myself taking coup as I raced east to my Chicago appointment. I took the bypass road through Badlands Mational Park at Wall, SD; drove as fast as I dared;
stopped twice for pictures; used the bathrooms at the Visitor Center; and raced back onto the freeway. "OK. Got that one. Let's go!" Sorry Badlands. I promise to do better next time.
