Mrs. McAbee

During the summer, several people spend time pretending as if the year is about 1900 on the Spooner Ranch, at what is now Montana de Oro State Park. They reveal, in sometimes subtle humor, what it was like to live more than a century ago along the Central Coast. I discovered that, as "living history" actors, the "Pecho Players" will not break character.

To make some surprisingly easy changes to the portrait, origionally photographed in color, I used the Macintosh program, iPhoto. I called up a few commands: sepia tone, edge blur, and sharpening, to create a stylized impression of a photograph made more than a century ago.

This image is an impressive demonstration of what iPhoto can do in the hands of someone who knows what he is doing. I have always claimed that most cameras are essentially similar to one another -- it's the skill, knowledge and passion of the photographer that makes pictures. The same thing could be said for photo editing software. Obviously, Photoshop offers a greater range of editing tools, but even this comparatively "primitive" set of tools offered by iPhoto can, in the hands of a skilled photo editor, produce expressive effects such as these.
