The Balustrades of Lake Pontchartrain at West End

New Orleans

This area was once lined with seafood restaurants and a park. Hurricane Katrina, now said to be the greatest disaster ever to hit the United States mainland, brought a tidal surge that swept everything away. All that is left are the pilings and the balustrades. It is now part of history just as the ruins of Pompei and the Tsunami devastation.

Very dramatic. Great detail and I really like the angle.

A sad story indeed, but what interesting little shapes on that weathered surface. It's a very handsome and well composed photo, visually pleasing and journalistically significant.

A sad but beautiful image.

beautiful tones - something almost mocking about that damaged balustrade against the serene blue sea and sky.

quite sad to see

Exquisite work, terrific composition. GMV Sad perhaps--but a story that needs to be told... and retold...

I don't mean to sadden anyone with these photos but merely to show what has happened; things that cannot be undone no matter how hard we click our red shoes together.

A powerful statement Coleen. I continue to be saddened by your images.

All will heal in time...
...it's just that we don't know to what extent.
Take a deep breath.

Nice photo despite everything. I am always drawn to this wall. It says a lot, and louder than all the trash you had to climb over to take this shot.

There is a quiet beauty in this photo, almost a reverence for what was. It touched me deeply.

This looks like something from ancient Greece or Rome.
