George Washington's Bathtub, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.jpg

Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

Berkeley Springs in West Virginia has been used for medicinal or relaxation bathing for centuries, first by Native Americans and then by colonial Americans, including George Washington and Lord Fairfax. Washington helped found the town (originally known as Bath) and he and his family bathed in its waters over many years. Although identified as George Washington's Bathtub, this is in fact a reconstruction of the primitive conditions prior to 1784 where early bathers, including Washington and his family, soaked in spring-fed pools hollowed out from the sandy hillside.

Jim, you are correct and I have revised the description accordingly. I had not read the "Town Tour" or anything else about the structure's origin but took the sign at face value. Thanks for correction.

You have probably been told this often, but the online"Town Tour" says that: "In fact, this is a modern reconstruction of the primitive conditions prior to 1784 where early bathers including Washington and hundreds of other summer visitors, soaked in springs-filled pools hollowed out from the natural terrain of the sandy hillside. But then, who cares?...It's fun to imagine.
