hong kong

smoke-free

I was on a ferry, travelling from Cheung Chau island back to Hong Kong mainland.
Feeling bored, I decided to take a window seat. I then noticed the sky was growing dark, with gathering clouds.
In the distance is a multitude of industrial chimneys, rising high, like matchsticks on the far horizon.
As I recalled Jude and Craig having phenomenal picture of smoke stacks, I was hoping to see volumes of smoke from those chimneys.
Perhaps also a sweep of wind, leaving smoky trail and in turn creating a photographic emulsion.
Putting my "sinful" thought away, I took what I called a smoke-free shot.
Soon I was glad to see a clearer sky ahead and the disappearing dark clouds.
I knew at that moment it would be a better day tomorrow :-)

(Treatment inspired by DJ Wixx. Please click here for the entire gallery ~ the traveller.)

Maybe these smoke stacks are the ones making the clouds, and some higher power controls the level, and turn them on when the sky becomes too blue! ;-)

Incredibly dramatic, Al. The b & w, high contrast and grain are so perfect for the starkness of the subject. Your photography is coming on so much, it's great to watch. V.

Its amazing how clouds can take on the form of grimy black smoke when all they hold is rain. The treatment really drives this industrial scene. The black stacks stand so strong against all that movement. well done al li

This is an awesome shot. Love the composition of keeping the towers low and right and letting the sky do the rest. I remeber the same images of smoke stacks from Jude and Craig. This is worthy of comparison. The low key treatment fills in for the lack of smoke. Great work. V

Such a pleasure to read your thoughts on this amazing image. The smoke would have made a nice shot, however, smoke free is the best and this image is proof! voted
