This shot is not meant to imply that our captain had suicidal tendencies. He is not
steering the boat into the shore. In fact, he is not steering it at all! (I should
have demanded a discount for his lapse of duty.) Instead of manning the helm, Captain
Andy is once again grappling with a piece of river debris that has clogged the
jetboat's water intake duct or "gearbox" or whatever it is called. I and my fellow
passenger were white with fear as we drifted close to the edge of the mighty Colorado,
certain that our conveyance would be smashed upon the ragged beach or torn to ribbons
by the tamarisk. Just before I had a panic attack the captain got the engine going
and we resumed our downstream passage.
How I managed to compose myself to take this picture I don't know.
