Magpie

Llanelli

Pica pica
AKA: Black-billed magpie (N America)
Magpies seem to be jacks of all trades – scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers, their challenging, almost arrogant attitude has won them few friends. With its noisy chattering, black-and-white plumage and long tail, there is nothing else quite like the magpie in the UK. When seen close-up its black plumage takes on an altogether more colourful hue with a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers, and a green gloss to the tail. Non-breeding birds will gather together in flocks. (Info from www.rspb.org.uk)

I'm a HGV driver and they should rename these the motorway magpie they are always jumping from the hard shoulder to scavenge scraps from the road, and I feed them when I take my break and was suprised to see that when they had eaten some of my sandwich they would take what was left and hide it in the long grass and cover it with leaves, when they realised that was all they were getting they would return to eat from there leafy larder,(they aint no bird brain)

I hate them. Since they moved in to trees across my road, about fifteen years ago, all my small bird life, has disappeared. THey are killers, taking fledgelings from other birds nests to feed their own young. When are the R.S.P.C.B. going to declare them as pests, and allow them to be culled .
