From the Salisbury Cathedral Close Guide:
"Built in the early 14th century the chapel of the Vicars Choral above the gateway was added later.
The Vicars Choral had formed a guild and lived a communal life nearby in the Vicars Hall at No 12.
The Guild was dissolved at the Reformation and the gate house came into lay occupation.
By the time the Harris family had occupied the canonry to the north they also took over the chapel above the gate,
which became their music room. It has been said that Handel gave his first public performance in Britain,
in Salisbury, in the room above St Ann Gate."
