Thanks for the comments, both. It's a combination of haze and a lot of fine, flying sand. A nightmare on the lungs, but good looking in photos :-)

I really like the way that the haze (is it flying sand, or mist, or something else?) obscures the distance, focussing attention on the marvellous texture of the ridge in the foreground.
