Echoes of the past, Shanghai, China, 2006

Ceramic figurines of long dead Chinese heroes and heroines vie for attention in an Old Shanghai antique shop. I focused on an old decorative container, which to me symbolized the flamboyant and often shady history of this colorful city. I would like to think of it as something that was once in an opium or gambling den. Behind it marches Chinese history itself. I think I see many Maos, Chou En-lai, maybe even Madame Chiang. They are softly focused and semi obscured – but we certainly feel their presence. Together these items, photographed in soft and warm natural light, create the very nostalgic atmosphere that drives a Shanghai antique shop. This is a mood shot, pure and simple.

That's what drew me to this image. The pervasive legacy of Mao is still everywhere in China. He may, as my Chinese friend Jen Zhou has pointed out, be tourist fodder for antique shops these days, but his hand still lies heavy on the land. China may be roaring into the future, but the many Maos here underscore its many, and often nostalgic, links to the recent past.

I, too, see many Maos, still weilding influence over the presentation of China's history.

Eerie Nostalgia! A good way to sum up the mood and atmosphere of this image. Thanks, Tim.

The brightness in the foreground hold us in the present - while the warm glow from the past is filled with figurines who wave to us. Very eerie feeling.

The painterly palette was purposeful, Kal. I wanted a mood shot here -- the inside of the shop was dark and the bulk of the image is gold, and dark gold is a reoccurring motif in 16th-19th century painting. Such light and color evokes nostalgia, a primary source of mood and atmosphere.

Like a Ruebens or some other masterful painting. Dark and painterly. K
