At rest, Guilin, China, 2006

A few moments earlier this woman had been digging dirt, deep within this trench. She now watches the labors of her partner, who is so deep within the ditch that we can't see her at the moment. The two men in the background pay no heed to either of them. This woman needs these few moments of rest in order to recapture her strength. It is brutally difficult physical work, and in China, such work seems to be performed as much or more by women as men. This image conveys such human values as rest and recuperation, and perhaps a touch of resentment as well.

That's the heart of it, Xin. The inability to change her situation. She appears resigned to the fact that she must do this kind of work in order to survive. The men behind her can do whatever they please. She has no such options.

Yes, her pose and eyesight suggested the resentment, the frustration, the bitterness and the inability to change the way she is.

Wouldn't you feel discouraged if you had to dig ditches all day for a living? I would. It is only human to feel somewhat downcast when you know that you never will really reach the bottom of it. There is always another ditch to dig, and another and then another.

It is definitely not the kindof pause we are used to here. Could she be somewhat discouraged?
