Tailed aguna

Aguna metophis

This was the first time we ever had a chance to try for shots of a tailed aguna. The first time we ever saw this butterfly was during the Mission Butterfly Festival where author and tour leader Jim Brock pointed one out to a group of butterfly watchers. This is not a species commonly found in the U.S. So when we came across this one in Mexico, we waited and watched it for quite a while before it finally perched somewhere we could get close enough to grab a few images. Still, I had to stand on top of our pickup truck and reach up toward a cutbank of flowers to get in position to take this photo.
