Bill was 48 or 49 y/o ( I can't remember now) here in this photo taken in Northern Oergon. He was clean shaven and hiked to black dress shoes. ( Not sure how much was true but anything is possible) He claimed to be the second hiker after Eric Ryback to hike the trail. ( My own take is , " Hey , this guy may very well be D.B. Cooper" who hyjacked a plane in early 70's and jumped out with 200,000 dollars. Bill dressed like he bought is outdoor clothing at Sears instead of REI, EMS, etc. He may have been the "Grandpa Gatewood" of the west or was he D.B. Cooper hiding out as a thru-hiker which would be easy to avoid law ( at the time before the grapevine of the trail).. Clean shaven and black dress shoes stand out in the woods, but he knew alot about the PCT and had been walking for 400 miles as reporded by Kelty Kids and Strider........ ( Bill/D.B. had a very high IQ) He finally gave up chain smoking and drinking Bourbon.....
