I had to put my border collie, Airlie, to sleep tonight (Friday, 2/10/06). I found out only three weeks ago that she had canine lymphoma (cancer of the lymphnodes) and that she only had a few weeks to live without aggressive chemo or other intervention - something I believe to be only in the interest of the owner, not the dog. I promised myself (and her) that I would not let that happen. In the interim, we did as much sheepherding (or just watching sheep) as we could -- something that Airlie was obviously meant to do. Nothing made her happier, and at least it made me feel like I was able to do something just for her. When I came home tonight, it was obvious that the time had come, so we took her to the vet. Holding her (for my comfort as much as hers) and saying goodbye while the vet administered the injection was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Even as she slipped away, her eyes remained clear and bright, as if to say goodbye and, I hope, thank you. I adored this dog and will miss her terribly. May you find rest and peace, Airlie.
