I especially like the fact that the enclosing dome is shaped like another, more-modern piece of warfare: either a bullet, or the business end of a missile or the transparent nose of a WW-II plane through which the bombardier observed the terrain ahead. You've captured a time-wise perspective as well as a spatial one. .. Lew

Well, that explains the enclosure around the tower. How would you like to be the guy who had to haul the lead up to the top of the thing? And you thought you had a tough job :)

I like the way the tower is pointed right at the top of the dome. That gridwork really does emhasize the perspective. Jim H.

Thanks Sharon. Shot Towers were used for making lead shot for guns. Molten lead dropped from a seive at the top was formed into spheres by surface tension as it fell. The tower needs to be high enough for the lead to start to solidify on the way down. A water tank at the bottom cooled the shot balls. In Melbourne, we aso have another shot tower that I think is the tallest in the world ... but it is not as interesting to photograph as this one.

Thanks for reducing the size of your image! I guess it would be confusing entering in more than one challenge. All three of your shots are really good. This one is very dramatic and a bit surreal as if someone had gotten two different time periods confused. You did a good job with the exposure and, of course, it is spot on for perspective! What is a shot tower? ~Sharon

Jim - this tower now stands inside a shopping complex. The tower was heritage protected, so the developers solution was to turn it into a feature under the glass roof.

Sharon - I have resized my images (sorry I am used to 200K for the other challenges)

Nifty, this image is too big at 192KB. Please resize to 150KB or less and repost, thanks! Sharon

Wow. I've always heard about these things. I guess I never thought about how you might have to enclose the area to keep the wind from messing up your shot formation. I guess I always envisioned it all being done internally. But this is an amazing sight. Is this thing still in use? Jim H.
