The wind before the rains, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, 2006

The sun is gone, and flocks of egrets soar over the banks of the Luangwa River under a painterly sky. The birds seem to flow between the clouds and the trees, pushed by the winds that precede the evening rains. This image is also drained of its color by nature itself. I did not convert it to black and white – but the elements did. Perhaps a subtle touch of greenish blue yet floats among the clouds. If so, it adds a touch of reality to an unreal scene. It’s an African abstract, shot from a small boat being blown down the Luangwa River. I wanted it to represent how I felt about what I saw at that moment. I think it does just that.

Thanks for your view on this image, Alister. It is all about mood, isn't it? As for the egret with the missing wing-tip and tail at lower left, I kept it in because it is entering the frame. If it was exiting and had only its tail showing at the edge of the shot, I would have cropped it out. But I see no problem with half a creature entering a frame. (Seehttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/55197063) Its presence extends the line of birds diagonally from lower to upper right.

A very fine image indeed Phil and one which captures that crepuscular mood perfectly...The positioning of the birds is ideal, filling the empty space with life and movement, mirrored by the dramatic sky full of pent up energy ready to release...I will be a little critical though..The bottom left Egret cut by the frame bothers me a little, in or out?
