Lovely old Lady Photographed in Maldon (Country Victoria) circa 1979

I do not know who this little old lady was, we were in Maldon (country Victoria) for a photography workshop with Photographic Studies College. A couple of us were walking down the main street when one of the group asked the lady if we could take her photo at which time I took mine. The lady may have passed on by now but her image is alive on the internet for all to see. This image was captured in a much nicer time in history.

After years of wonder who this lady was I went back to where I thought I took the photo - Maldon, Victoria. After visiting the local Tourist Information Centre I was advised to see the editor of the local newspaper and here is the results.

Hi Wayne

Here is the answer to your question re the lady with the dog. We published you request in the Tarrangower Times on Friday and the result is below.

Very best regards

Dear Viv & Nancy
The photo of the lady with the dog is DOT BROWN a spinster. She lived in the first big house on the left as you enter the Parkins Reef Road/Newstead road.
Miss Brown as we knew her as children (I lived further along Parkings Reef Road) was a very devoted breeder of Australia Silky Terriers.
As I remember she won many prizes at all levels at shows including Royal Melbourne. She sold puppies for income. I recall she won Tatt's in those days which was a big thing to us as children.
I believe she was the sister of Mrs Johnco who lived on the Castlemaine Road in the little cottage second from the corner on the right. Her other great friend was Mrs Allie Cook who lived further along the Parkins Reef Road 4 doors up from Ms Brown. She bred pomeraniums.
In later years when I lived at Trevenson Park Stud where Jo Barty was the Veterinarian we would often have both ladies out to the Farm for attention to their animals. Ms Brown was very thrifty but Mrs Cook
was just the oppositie. I remember on one occasion Ms Brown did not bring her purse to pay but Mrs Cook did! Mrs Cook just emptied her purse on the counter and told Mrs Barty to just
take whatever she wanted. Mrs Barty rarely took very much from this dear lady.
Anyway I am sure there will be many other residents who will remember Dot Brown.
Kind Regards
Judy McKnight
