27-NOV-2005 Helen Betts

9th Place
The Nose Knows

by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

I thought this would be a good idea, but Tilki's snout is pretty short so wasn't able to get a very shallow DOF with her eyes, unfortunately. But after all the bribing, threatening and cajoling we did and because of my husband's endless patience in trying to keep a hyperactive dog (with an aversion to cameras) calm enough for the picture (plus almost getting bit!), I'm putting it in :-).

Helen,
What a cooperative and cute model! Fine technical skill at full zoom on the H-1 with 1/80 sec!!

Lovely shot, Helen. I can almost feel the cold and wetness of her nose, and the quick lick of her tongue, which I'm sure is not far away ;-)

Helen, I really like the close crop and "nosey" composition of your friend here...well exposed and good detail at your focal point. I want to reach out and pet her muzzle :) Good idea and a cute shot. I know what you mean about keeping our pets still for the shot...I tried something simlar this weekend, but wasn't very successful. Glad you succeeded :) MFC

I know the feeling of an active model all too well, lol. It takes a bunch of patience and a quick trigger finger. I love this picture because the nose is 3d and I can still get lost in his eyes for awhile. Excellent work!

Helen, the photo is wonderful!! His nose does jump right out of the screen. Amazing work with a moving dog, I had enought trouble with inanimate objects!!!!!

Helen, this is a great image. I love the way you filled the frame with his face, and the look on it. ;) Fatih.

Very cool shot - I love the focus on his nose, it looks so 3-dimensional, like it's sticking out of my computer screen!
