Tourists returning from China tell stories of how awful the public toilets are. They are not exaggerating.
But there are a few public toilets at the more popular tourist spots with running water, western-style
sit-down toilet pedestals (as distinct from a hole in the floor), toilet paper (although you may have to
ask the attendant for it), an attendant (often), soap, lighting, towels and even a mirror. I seem to
remember a chandelier in one. They have signs like this. Worth visiting just for the experience.
Warning to tourists visiting the Stone Forest near Kunming: You will be enlightened as to
the real meaning of the word "public" in "public toilet". A different experience. Zero stars.
