Our youngest son and his wife evacuated to Lafayette, Louisiana.
Martial law had now been declared in Jefferson Parish and police of every state, county and military branch were guarding the borders. I was able to enter with my law enforcement credentials five days after the hurricane. My son was with me. After weaving our way through streets of downed trees, sheds, roofs and power lines we arrived at his house first. When he saw that his house and his oak were still standing tall and that the oak was not through the roof of his house he was estatic because we had seen much damage on his street. However, upon entering his house we found that more than a foot of water had come in and mold and mildew were already setting in. This flood water was caused because the Parish President chose to send the pump operators some 75 miles across Lake Pontchartrain, therefore there was no one to man the pumping stations.
