Hi Grant,

I don't "play" here anymore because I've just become a bit consumed in trying run the photo biz. I way too easily find myself diverting my time when I shouldn't. So, I check in now and again, and I received about a dozen emails/IM's about your image so I had to go check it out! :-)

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments Jim,

I figured (hoped) that your image was so good because of a lot of serendipity. I have a few of my own that I have tried to improve one little thing by reshooting it and it is hopelessly difficult te recreate the circumstances of the shot, much less the shot itself. I wanted to try your image for a couple of reasons...one-no shortage of corn in Iowa, two-I've always admired how well the absurdity of standing in a cornfield for a self-portrait worked for you and three-I liked the symbolism that it was the first winner. Speaking of which, why don't you play here anymore?

Heheh... this is too funny. I had to do a double-take!

Grant, I was really fortunate with the light and the wind when I took my photo. I was looking to do a photo in corn and driving back to Minneapolis from Fargo when I had just driven through a big storm. When the storm cleared the light was perfect, and the wind helped me out with the corn.

I got off the interstate to drive by grandparents old farm and town and when I was looking for just the right place. I knew I wanted to take a shot in the corn, but when I saw the husks all pointing the same direction I knew that was the spot! Man, I can't believe how short my hair was then! You wouldn't believe the strange looks the farmers were giving me!

I think you did a pretty nice job here. Gotta lose the hat, man. :-)

Just a typo correction... "Being a huge fan of Jim Fuglestad's work, I can't quite say you nailed it... but did a good job in your own right...."

Being a huge fan of Jim Fuglestad's work, I can quite say you nailed it... but did a good job in your own right.
One of the interesting aspect of Jim's was that he managed to have not only interesting lighting, but very interesting composition, in that all the corn was pointed in the same direction as him!

I've a huge smile on my face... your parameters for the shot and the shot are both amusing. This is really just tooo funny! ~ Lonnit

Let me ammend that...I like the colors better in your version. They are just different pictures and yours can certainly stand alone on its own two feet. Best wishes, Traveller

I agree that Jim's was probably better...but this was a noble effort. I also very much appreciate knowing the trouble you had to go to get the shot. However, I DO like the hat. Best Wishes, Traveller

Your efforts paid off well! theFly

You wouldn't believe how hard this was to recreate. You might think that in Iowa, this is a piece of cake. That would be wrong. While racing the light, I had to find a cornfield:
1. close to the road
2. facing east
3. with the rows going in the right direction
4. out of the way so I don't get shot at for trespassing
5. with the ground at the right height to support the tripod

It took me 45 minutes to find THIS spot and I agree that it and the light were a compromise. I had requested a low sun with dramatic grey clouds but they were backordered. All I could get was some haze...

What's wrong with the hat? I love that hat.

I drove past a field of corn today and I thought aha! I'll do that one. Now it seems, maybe not ;) You've done a good job. Not so sure about the hat though.

LOL! I love it. I've always liked that photo by Jim. (Where’s he been, btw?) I think you've done a grand job in imitation. Even matched the jacket spot on. Well done. -EarlWaud

This is going to sound really harsh... but this image proves how good Jim's original was!
I think the light is too harsh here - Jim's was much softer, presumably shot later in the day. Jim's composition is better overall too, the wider view in his pic works better than the tighter crop here.
...but I think it's the light that makes the biggest difference.
