The most significant thing in this image for me is his hand,,, it is worn and weathered almost apears not to be his, a small boy with old hands. That is enough to make us all to sit upright and widen our eyes.

Ruth, I am viewing your images just minutes after getting home from our meeting today and this is the first image I have opened and already, WOW! It's a marvellous portrait, very full of character! I can't wait to view the rest of your work!

You know what, Ruthie... I saw this photograph and I thought about you, about you in the eyes and soul of this little kid!
Paul said it in a wonderful way.. No matter what happen outside, he still has a sparkling soul that speaks through his eyes, like you.. !!

By making this image just as this child abstracts his own mouth by kissing his cane, you call attention to the eyes that carry the hope that Paul expressed so well here. It is your timing, Ruthie, and as well as your compassion, that make this image work so well. Most photographers would have waited for the child to stop kissing his cane so they could have included the entire face. But you instinctively recognized the incongruity here, and the symbolism as well. This child must be crippled, yet you don't show his frailty. Instead you tell us how he intuitively responds to what life has brought him.

This picture well illustrates that, amidst poverty, pain, and sorrow, a child can glean happiness. Who knows what this child is suffering, what hardships he has to face, but we do well to reflect on the fact that children, gods gift to man, can bring a smile to any situation, however grim. It's also a reminder for us to have a hope. A hope in the things unseen, a hope for the future. With this image, you captured these emotions perfectly.
