Cockroach egg-case

Mornington Sanctuary, Western Australia

Wow-that's gotta hurt.. The real miracle of birth, as far as I am concerned, is that anyone would undertake to give birth voluntarily.
This is the egg case of a native Australian cockroach which feeds on decomposing grasses in the arid zone.

this 'egg' is actually an egg-case (ootheca) containing 12-40 eggs depending on species,
some species carry them externally, others just drop them on the ground, others glue them to bark or leaves and some actually retract them and carry them internally (ovoviviparous).
