Moire

Shot with D70 and Sigma 15mm f/2.8 fully open. Comparison segments are 100% crops from the pic at upper left corner. This camera/lens combo measures 54 lp/mm MTF30 at center; sharp enough to provoke moire. Rusty steel panel at pic center has fine horizontal bands (wavy sheet) just about the Nyquist frequency density where Sigma 15/f2.8 still gives 23% contrast ratio. All converters set to default parameters, except for sharpening that was set to none or minimum. Only 3 converters (NCE, Bibble and RML) have some sort of moire control that was engaged in all 3 cases. Converters used: Bibble Pro 4.2.6 , Raw Magick Lite 0.989b , DxO Optics Pro 3.0 beta , Adobe Photoshop CS2 + ACR 3.1 , Dave Coffin's latest DCRaw, Breeze Browser 2.9 , C1 Pro 3.5.2 , Nikon Capture Editor 4.2.1 , Picasa 2 , Raw PhotoDesk 1.12 , Raw Shooter Essentials 1.1.2 .
Notice that some converters DO have sharpening turned on, sometimes pretty heavy, like PhotoDesk. Sensible, fine pitched sharpening (like in C1) is allmost unnoticed and fools the eye giving the particular converter advantage over sharpening-free converters like DCRaw or RML.
