The Divine Agony of Beauty * (Plus An Elaborate Explanation In Comments)

The purpose of the Challenge for me is to force me to stretch myself. We tend to do over and over the same things, especially if we do them well. Normally, I leave an image what it is, that is almost the point of photography...to stop time, to catch and make fast what is ephemeral.

In this image, the structure and the colors were fine, but, I saw something else in my mind's eye. Therefore, I white pointed the background to white in levels, cloned out some cement lines, but the hands were bluish from the white point application...so I found the blue chanel and Voila`, the image became B&W without affecting the red flower in the hand, (too much). I don't know about other people, but I have about 12 different versions of this image now, some with a touch of Digital Velvia, which blew out the reds even worse, though I think that I liked that image better...but unblown reds, or as little as possible, seems to be the goal, and so I post this version. It should also maybe be noted that the was taken with the 18~55mm Kit lens as part of my continuing test to see if I can live with it on a general basis.

I worked this in 16 bit Tiff, and I hope that this hasn't striped off the EXIF. We'll see. (I also had an alterative title...The Spititual Agony of Beauty...Does anyone prefer one title over the other?)

Andy, well thank you for your thoughtful comments. It is fine that you don't vote for this image...but a number of people have seen it now, (outside this Challenge), and I think that they are being disingenious by not recognizing the scene.

Since I am new to the Challenges, I'm going to try to embed where this is trying to be.

Here's the first image:

And, of course, the entire work:

I am probably the least religious person possible...but I do deeply respect what feelings these symbols can evoke.

So I guess the question is...do people recognize what is going on, and just feel queezy about commenting...or, did I just fail completely in my photographic skills?

Real Best Wishes,

Traveller

Traveller,

I am surprised that no one has commented n this image. My reason for not commenting is that i don't want to be the first because i don't know what i'm talking about. However' the time and effort you have put into this image deserves some consideration.

I'll start straight off by saying i haven't got a clue as to what its about. But that's because you're a spiritual type of person and i'm not. It could be that very depth which have submerged your image is confusing for your audience.

As far as the visual imact goes, it is promising (promising being about 10 rungs up from where i stand) Being a symbolic image i think it would be ok to maybe have b&w hands because i think the bronze is too yellow. The flash has made a bit of a mess of the higlights. The background cross i assume is distracting - perhaps it could go. The rose is fine.I'm not a big flower fan. Maybe a bit unusual to see a rose not n a stem - with thorns - that would be good.

Anyway - you might guess that i won't vote for it because i'm not spiritual and im not a flower fan. But i do appreciate the thought that you have put in to your work.

This is a re-shoot, but with a rose and with the 35mm f2 prime lens instead of the 18~55 kit lens. I think I still preferred the first one, but, it got no comments and this one is certainly cleaner and crisper.

I did receive some criticism on the first version, but distressing it was that they didn't know what it was an image of...though they liked it.

Hummmm...too much ambiguity?

Best Wishes,
