Keeping an eye out - April 23, 2005

Eastern Box Turtle – Terrapene Carolina. The Eastern Box Turtle is predominantly found in the
eastern half of the United States, most commonly in the Southeast. Unlike most turtles and
tortoises, the Box Turtle possesses a high, domelike shell with a hinged plastron that permits the
shell to close completely. Its carapace is normally a brownish color with orange, yellow or white
spots and/or streaks. Males are generally identified as having red eyes. Box turtles are
omnivorous and are known to feed on a variety of plants, insects and occasionally dead animals.
