Coal Tipple

West Virginia

Several people have asked to see what coal mining looks like. So I made a drive to McDowell County.

This is a shot of a tipple. A tipple is a central facility used in loading coal for transportation by rail or truck.

Great photo - if it wasn't for coal we'd be a little colder and reading by candlelight - and oh btw, we'd never see this great photo because our computers wouldn't work.

Winter is a terrible season in West Virginia. I grew up in the Nitro and Cross Lanes area in West Virginia, which is a destination for a lot of the coal, due to the John Amos Power plant. Three large cooling towers and two insanely tall stacks makes for an ominous back drop. The coal fired power plant is not what makes Nitro unforgettably rank, its the constant stench of sulphur and various other pestiferous chemical odors emanating from the numerous chemical plants. Our high school cross country team's shirt had a skeleton jogging with the skyline of stacks in back ground. West Virginia is absolutely gorgeous in the summer though and despite all the aforementioned ugliness, a wonderful place for a boy to grow up. Karen thank you for the photo of the majestic coal tipple. For all those folks that aren't from a place like this - don't immediately judge it as a horrible place, just see it as a place where people are making a living their way, just like those hog farms I pass on my way back to Wilmington, NC.

Not much mining left in the uk - mostly imported! Pit closures affected many areas - to this day.

For over 20 years, I earned my living working in a hard rock mine, 3000 ft below the surface. I guess some would call it a tough job, but I always said I would never work in a coal mine. I still say that. Thank you for sharing this with us, Karen.
