Within Yellowstone, there are thousands of Coyotes that are very well adapted for winter life in the park. They survive on various rodents, birds and carrion. This is one of several shots of this little guy that was traveling with a second coyote. As we approached we were able to see him pouncing, a behavior that breaks the top ice level allowing him/her to get to small mice that tunnel through the snow.
I got to see a total of three of these small little scavengers but only got decent photographs of this one. While they are hunters themselves, they must always be cautious of other hunters like wolfs (of which I did not see a single one:-( ) and eagles.
