No problem Barri, I'm getting a lot out of your comments too. I feel exactly the same about my mother, that generation felt more strongly the call of duty, whereas there is less discipline and selflessness about today. I'm Scottish and my wife's from China, so we have a nice mix of cultures. I have very few friends back in UK, they all seem a little to predjudiced and narrow-minded to me now..

I very much work on intuition also, I'll crop something on a gut feeling!!

Photography's excellent!!

Nice to have shared these thoughts, look forward to more as I work through your galleries...

Cheers Alister

Oh and to add...I had several photos of this table, taken that day. I sort of select by intuition many times. The others were much more balanced and cropped more conventionaly. I chose this version. I think it was more subliminal, than for conscious reasons. You have in your question made me sort out why, and I thank you for that. This is a great thing about Pbase.

Yes Alister I think she is fairly happy with her life, and she has many unsung accomplishments. It is I, who wonder what she, and millions of other women of her generation could have become...without the constraints placed upon women of her generation. Many in my country today stand in judgement of other's societies, and how women are treated in them. They forget that 50 years ago women, among other social groups here, had very little equality, and almost no real oppurtunity to be other than what they were expected to be. Thanks

Thanks for that Barri, I'm glad I was able to see where you were going with this image.
It also bears out my conclusion that not many people get what they want, we can't have it all, some settle for what they can get, others push to deviate from the norm and are critisized for it.
Jealousy of others success is easier than contempt for ones own failure..

These are observations, I'm pretty happy with my lot!!!!!

Well...I've never tried to explain this one in words. My mother is quite elderly, she's lived her whole life pretty much in the service of others. She left her people in another land when I was born, never to return. She is extremely intelligent and perceptive...yet has only lived to care for others. There is nothing wrong with this I guess, but maybe there should be more for some people...for all people. Yes tension. A table top well kept, flowers and the bars of window blinds (a cage?)...just outlined in the darkness. Thanks you for your insightful perceptions Alister. Like the surface of a deep water. Thanks again.

This is a really interesting image Barri, I'm not sure of your intention, but to me there is a lot of tension in this image, and one that I would have thought would have been more serene. I think it's the books so near the left hand frame edge, and the slight diagonal orientation.Oh and the vase cropped off half way through the flowers...

In fact, the more I look at this, it appears you are making some kind of statement about domestic life in general?

Am I getting anywhere with this, or am I just cuckoo!!?

Great image..
