Mt. Rainier Dominating Southern Views (Slide)

The colors are a bit off in this but that's a natural function of haze with so much air between the camera and the subject. Topo shows it as 42 miles away. I don't mind the shades of blue anyway although the crispness in the high res version makes it much better. You get a nice view of Little Tahoma, the peak on the left side of Rainier.

Rainier towers like few other mountains. It's not quite the highest mountain in the lower 48 but it's the most impressive visually in my opinion and has the highest spire measure as well. I'm not sure but I'd guess that it has the highest relief as well from base to summit. The Colorado fourteeners are generally much shorter but have higher elevations because of the high elevation just at the base of the plateau. There are some Colorado fourteeners that aren't any bigger in practice than a lot of the 7000 foot mountains in Washington. I don't think any of the Sierra Nevada mtns compare in size visually to Rainier. Perhaps some of the Northern Rockies with which I am less familiar, in Wyoming or Montana but the Tetons are the most impressive that I can think of off the top of my head and Rainier still beats them hands down. I would have to say that Mt. Shasta in Northern California, at the Southern end of the Cascade volcanic range of which Rainier is also a part, is the only mountain that competes with Rainier from among those in the lower 48 states. Even if you get into a global comparison, using Metzler's standard of prominence, Rainier is in the top 25 in the world along with the major peaks of Asia, South America and the ring of fire volcanoes as well as Alaskan peaks, Kilimanjaro and a few other oddballs.
