In thought, by Peggy Hammond, Phoenix, Arizona, 2003

This portrait was made by Peggy Hammond, a student in one of my tutorials in basic digital photography. She wanted to improve her portrait skills, and I asked her to throw a bunch of tough questions at me and then photograph me trying to answer them. She took many shots over a ten minute period. This was her favorite. And mine, as well. I use it as my pbase profile page portrait because it most accurately depicts me in action. Her portrait nails both the mission, and the man.

Thank you, Sofia, for appreciating what I am trying to do for other photographers. If I can help you better express ideas with your own camera by showing you how and why I express them with my own, I will be delighted.

A very thoughtful portrait, Peggy did such a fine job! Thank you Phil, for being the way you are, willing to help and that means loving the humanity in a large sense. I just learned about your gallery and your teaching book from the thankful message on Patricia Lay-Dorsey (windchimewalker) profile. I will try to read it all! You have been doing so much effort to bring love and beauty into this world, thank you for that!
Best regards,
Sofia from Volgograd, Russia

LIfe has been good to me, Marcia. Every day brings another gift, it seems. Today's joy was meeting you and seeing your works. Thanks for this comment. I will let Peggy know that you think she made me look "handsome and poetic."
Actually, I was trying to answer one of her good questions at the moment she made this image.

Phil you look so handsome, Poetic and full of life...looks like life has been good to you!

The light source for this portrait was a desk lamp a few feet away, with one 60 watt incandescent bulb. She used ISO800 and most likely, Auto white balance. Very simple, and in this case, very effective.

I'd be interested in knowing how this shot was lit. It is of course excellent and a good choice for your profile shot.
Phil Douglis23-Nov-2006 01:24
So do I, Chris. That's why I still use this one as the image on my profile page -- it puts the viewer into direct contact with me.

My favourite too. Strong portrait Phil!
I like the expression, frame and warm light upon your face.

Thanks, Ade -- I was truly puzzled, and Peggy makes it palpable.

Nice to meet you. Great capture of the light and "Puzzled " expression here

Thanks, Lorraine. It's interesting how both you and Jenene, my other new student, come to similar conclusions about me. She saw a bit mischief while you see playfulness --both of which are accurate. I have a twisted sense of humor -- otherwise it would be hard to recognize the incongruous when I see it. I'll gladly accept whatever patience and wisdom you care to ascribe to me. You can test that out by asking me a lot of tough questions like Peggy was doing here! Thanks for sharing your insights with me.

Nice to meet you Phil.... agree this picture screams patience, wisdom and also a playfull streak.
Phil Douglis15-May-2006 18:16
You read me well, Jenene -- mischievous is the operative word. Causing trouble in a playful way has always been dear to my way of seeing. Yes, I try to see the world with new eyes and push others to do so as well. It is with great pleasure that I can do this for you, too, Jenene. I will never grow up, and I hope you won't either!

I arrived at this photo through Christine's galleries. I agree with Bruce that this portrait of you illustrates patience, wisdom and understanding - all of value to you and us in your role as teacher. Trust is something you've earned from me through our interaction and not from your portrait. What I do see clearly that parallels Christine's portrait of the young boy, is a slight gleam in the eye, the mischevious Phil, who sees the world with new eyes, who helps all of us who aspire to be creative and expressive see the world as the young boy does, but with the wisdom of our teacher.

I see the similarities, and yes, there is indeed an age difference. You make me wish I could go back and become that kid, if but for a day or two. Thanks.

When Isaw Christine's picture athttp://www.pbase.com/eb2005/image/50110702, I thought of your picture. There is something similar - there is some age difference though...

You are very kind, and I thank you for your thoughts on my work. I am not a doctor, nor am I a professor. I am a workshop director and teacher of visual expression. I also make pictures, which I use in these galleries to demonstrate how I express ideas. I hope you find it helpful. Thanks again for your thoughts. Phil

Dr.Douglis:

I have been visiting your gallery for a long time. Every picture here is a piece of art.
I am amazed by your work!
Just a quick hello from one of your fans at pbase!
you look like a witty and nice professor :-)
Phil Douglis27-Feb-2005 02:58
You are very kind. Wisdom is a relative term. I know a lot, but there is a lot I don't know. I am always learning. Patient? Understanding? In some ways you are right. You must be both if you are a teacher. But I am also very impatient with myself. Trust? That means more to me than any of the other attributes, Bruce. Thanks.
Guest 25-Jan-2005 03:53
I've always thought that this was a perfect portrait of you. You come across as wise, patient and understanding. You and your student conveyed this very successfully. In fact, when I first visited your galleries I looked at your portrait and thought "He looks like someone I can trust." Cheers, Phil!

Carp all you want, Zebra. Some people have a thing for watches and fasteners (buttons). Others will go right to the face. Peggy made no mistake. It was a matter of your choice.

I think Peggy made a mistake.First I noticed is your watch,my second eye was on your fastener,at last I looked at your face.HaHa...am I a carper?
