American Three-toed Woodpecker (juvenile) 168_6817.jpg

Taken August 2004 at Mirror Lake (along the Highline Trail), Utah.

If you look at the juvenile (or immature) you will notice that the head is definitely more rounded than is the adult. The adult's forehead slopes more. I have seen this in field guides (i.e., via drawings) but I have not seen anybody adequately describe it.
