“Flying Scotsman”
For the summer the old steam train ‘Flying Scotsman’ has been making the trip from York to Scarborough passing through Malton on the way. All summer I’ve been going to go down and photograph it someplace along the line. Today, mum had looked up it’s times on the internet and passed them on to me. It was due to leave York 12-05 and arrive in Scarborough an hour later. I’d be able to intercept it at Kirkham which is only a mile or two down the road from us. When I got there it was sunny with some good stretches of blue sky but of course the train was late and by the time it got to me the sky had somewhat clouded up. Not only that but the old girl was going a lot faster than I expected so only got off about three shots! It was not easy exposing for the train but avoiding blowing the sky out – not only that but it became quite dull so this shot is not as bright as I would have hoped but think the clouds add some drama to the shot?
All being well it’s running tomorrow again and then 3 times next week after which that will be it for the summer and the old lady will go back into the museum (I expect?) As I have to drop Tom down at Malton station at about the time the Flying Scotsman passes through I’ll maybe see if I can do something a little better. The station down at Malton is quite old fashioned so may be the opportunity for a shot there – though knowing my luck there will be a smelly old diesel train sat in the station!! I’m not a huge train fan (certainly no train spotter) but do think the old steam engines are a glimpse into a time well passed now. Least tomorrow I know what I plan to shoot – whether it comes off or not may be another thing!!
