Waiting for Nails *

Massachusetts

I walked into a local hairdressing school and asked if I could take some pictures. I found these nail polish bottles and some interesting practice heads, but those will have to wait for another Challenge.

Photo was cropped and sharpened.

On the other hand, if the picture is for editorial purposes, they usually don't ask for a release.

I think it's a good idea to get a model release form for any picture that you will get paid for. Otherwise people in the picture can ask you for financial compensation if you use their picture for advertising.

Also, stock photography companies will not accept any people pictures from a photographer without a model release form.

But there are also those who will say "no" as if you're going to do something to them. I asked to take pictures in a barber shop--of bottles of hair tonic and stuff, not people--and was told that I'd have to speak to the owner, who wasn't in. The hardest thing has become getting pictures of children. In this country, at least, parents are almost paranoid about it. I was working on a photo project for our public library and wanted to get pictures of the children's activities. While some parents were very helpful, others just looked at me suspiciously and refused to give permission. How do other people handle this issue? Do I need to get a "model's release" for photos I might be posting to this site? Or only for photos I might be getting paid for?

Interesting how many times people just let you take pictures by just asking.
