Dark frame subtraction is used which greatly reduces the 'hotpixel' noise - this is standard technique for long exposure astronomical pictures. You are correct about the triple spotted star images, since the comet actually moved this much (the 3 images were aligned on the comet).

I am a bit surprised that using digital for astronomy would work so well - I would expect more CCD noise due to the exposure time, obviously layering multiple exposures gets round this to some extent.
I assume that the triple spotted star trails are due to the 3 exposures used ?
