Joop's Dog Log - Sunday Apr 25

So one of the big election issues in the US is now: the rising gas prices.
To some Americans their gas price at the pump is more important than
the situation in Iraq, or health care, or the poverty problem,
or better education, or the environment, or crime fighting.
Journalisthuman Bob Woodward smells a rat.
He believes GWB has made a secret deal with Saudi Arabia, to lower oil prices after the Summer,
just before the presidential elections, so GWB can claim he did motorists a favor.
And John Kerry said he thinks Bob W could be right.
This is all very crazy.
Fact is that gas is cheap in the US, compared to Europe.
My human pays 1 euro 24 for one liter unleaded here in The Netherlands.
In the US the price is only 40 eurocents a liter. So that`s less than one-third of our price.
Another fact is that American car owners refuse to exchange their gas guzzlers
for cars that get a good mileage. If they would all do that, the US wouldn`t even need
to import oil!... and wouldn`t feel so motivated to mess with Iraq, I`m sure.

Okay, okay, that`s enough, I know. And I don`t need gas anyway.
Going a Sunday hike! See y`all tomorrow!

You are right once again Joop. But we know elections in the states are all about show and not about politics. Too bad we can`t do anything about it. We can`t just go there and invade the USA to `liberate the American people`... Although sometimes I wish that were possible.

personally, i`d be pretty pleased if the dutch came and liberated us... i wouldn`t be surprised at all if bob woodward were right. Lovely field you`re wandering in today joop!

Hi Joop! I for one wouldn`t complain if they lowered gas prices in the US, it would probably affect our prices too! But I know it`s a lot cheaper here than in Europe. This week we are paying about $0.75 per litre, but it goes up and down day to day. Not sure how Can Dollars translate to Euros. I`m sure your knowledgable human could figure it out.
What an interesting path that is... where does it lead?

Well said, Joop. I live in America, I when I`m driving my little car, all I see around me are giant trucks and SUVs. But just the other day I read that people are starting to sell their SUVs and buy hybrids. More hybrids have been sold in America this year than the last 5 years combined. It`s still not very many, but maybe things are starting to change. I know that my next car will be a hybrid.
Thank you for your wonderful photos and thoughts.

It`s all true about the gas, Joop, but don`t forget: even those of us over here with efficient cars live in a large space, geographically. We use more than our share of the resource just to get to the grocery store.

I have followed Bob Woodward ever since the Nixon fiasco, and I have not seen him make any major journalistic mistakes. He is probably the most respected journalist in the United States...maybe even the world and he is VERY careful about his sources. He reports what he has heard in his interviews with people and has tapes to back up all his sources. I do not think he "mistook" the conversation about the Saudi Prince and oil prices. The Bushes are great friends of the Saudis...does that surprise anyone.

I totally disagree with babi2...we MUST care about this kind of thing...it is OUR world, too. If bush and others like him had their way, they would control us totally. Do you want that kind of control over your life, babi2?

I hope you enjoyed your Sunday hike! Looks great there! And yes, I understand about the gas. I enjoy it being cheap, but I wonder what is behind the gas prices (and GWB and the Saudis...). It is a lot more expensive in Canada (and Europe), so I really wonder WHY.

Wait Joop! Don't leave! We need you to run for Cheif Dog here in the states. I'd vote for you, tooo!
jypsee25-Apr-2004 18:53
Oh..Joop, you've opened the floodgates now! I see one commentator wants to take you to task for uttering the notion that somehow our stupid president has made for an election day "surprise" of his own. It sounds right to me and here's why: the fact is that the US is on the down side of oil reserve-to-production ratio. The R/P is the number of years that reserves of oil will last at CURRENT production rates. In the US (60 percent of recoverable oil has already been produced) the R/P is 10/1. In Saudi Arabia it is 55/1; in the United Arab Emirates it is 75/1; in Kuwait it is 116/1; and in Iraq it is 526/1. In other words, we're in Iraq for the oil. And we're allowing Saudi Arabia to foster fundamentalist hatred because of the oil. We "rescued" Kuwait for the oil. We empowered Saddam Hussein because of oil.
Americans equate freedom with ability to choose what we drive and getting out on the road to do it...just going where we please when we please. I'm and American and I have the same weakness for driving-as-freedom. But I, and my fellow Americans, need to rethink what freedom really is. I don't want to keep feeding the carbons in the atmosphere so I can be "free." I want a fuel efficient automobile, not more oil.

A hell of a smart dog. How bout running for office?
Guest 25-Apr-2004 14:00
Out of the $2/gallon we currently pay, about $0.60 is State and Federal taxes. So the market price is only about $1.40/gallon. How much are you folks over there paying in taxes?
Joop is certainly right about the gas guzzlers. It’s an odd lifestyle choice to be sure. I’m not ready to pay an extra 25% or so for Jeanne’s hybrid car that will require more maintenance than my relatively low tech econo-box though either.
As to the conspiracy theory commentary, it seems appropriate that it is emanating from the south side of a north bound dog.
Joop. How many shooters were there on the grassy knoll?

Well, this Joop may be not as smart as me, but sure he is an intelligent guy, LOL.

Dogs are the smartest people! I'd love to be coming along on that hike with you... looks great. Or maybe I could bicycle while you go for a run.

Man. Joop, you are so right!! I want a HYBRID car, and that will be my next car!! I can't believe the lies the Got't feeds to the people, and the people BELIEVE!! You are a smart dog!
