Sidewalk Siesta, Tecate, Mexico, 2004

The animals we see most frequently on our travels are usually dogs and cats. I choose not to use these sleeping dogs as subject matter in this picture, and instead go beyond the cliché by using them instead as context. I think this scene conveys the tranquility of a quiet neighborhood in this small Mexican town. These slumbering dogs are free to block the sidewalk, unmindful of the oncoming footsteps.

Thanks, Alejandra -- these dogs must be regulars. Tomas mentioned them in his comment last August, and now you tell me they are always there. Glad you like this shot and the one I made in Hidalgo Park. It is always special when local people such as yourself and Tomas write to me to tell me that they like the way I interpret their own streets. Thanks again for visiting my galleries.

Thanks, Tomas, for bringing a local perspective to this image. I love those sleeping dogs and the on-coming footsteps. Those shadows point right to the dogs, as as well as take the measure of that man's stride.

Mid Afternoon Siesta goes to the dogs, I have been to that barber shop and yep those dogs never miss their daily siesta. great image.

Glad you saw the whimsy here, Bryan. It's a dog's life, indeed!

Phil, This one brings a smile to my face and a little laugh. Here I see a bit of a contrast. Normally you associate 'man' sitting back and letting the dog do the work --- fetching, hunting, etc. Here though you have the 'man' doing the work while the dogs enjoy a nice little nap. Terrific foto Phil!!! Bryan

Sleeping dog, bright noonday sun, almost (but not completely) deserted pavement all give a sense of a hot afternoon and siesta.

I guess siesta time isn't only for humans. You realize these dogs rule this street right? :)
